Curriculum

Literacy

We use the Wonders Reading Series at the Primary School.  Each week, we will focus on a target reading skill and will have a specific phonics skill to practice.  There will be daily phonics homework.  Our Wonders anthology and guided reading stories are available online.

Math

We follow the Everyday Mathematics Program, a comprehensive program engineered for the Common Core State Standards.  The Everyday Mathematics spiral curriculum continually reinforces abstract math concepts through concrete real-world applications.  Everyday Mathematics online provides many useful resources for students and parents, including games and an interactice reference book to help with assignments.  Each student will receive a username and password to access Everyday Mathematics online.  The following link will give you access to our school's Everyday Math home page:  http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/school/w4b1

Writing Workshop

This year in writing workshop the students will learn about the writing process.  They will be composing personal narratives, informational, persuasive, and descriptive pieces.  They will also have the opportunity to work on self-selected pieces.  Throughout the year, I will conference with individual students to offer them one-on-one help in specific areas based on their needs. Our writing workshop will consist of mini-lessons that focus on content, style, organization, voice/style, and conventions.  Each student will recieve a Writer's Notebook.  This personalized book will serve as a blank slate for the students to grow as writers.  It will also make a great memory book from second grade!

Handwriting
This year in second grade we will be using the HANDWRITING WITHOUT TEARS program. This is a strong, developmentally-based curriculum. The program uses Music and Multisensory materials to engage children and develop their writing skills.

Science
Our FOSS science program will help the students to develop the skills needed to become observers, information seekers, and problem solvers. Our kits will consist of units designed to allow children to explore and inquire.  We will focus on Water, Insects and Plants, and Balance and Motion.

Social Studies

We follow the Impact Social Studies program.  Our social studies program will be centered around learning about the past, geography, wants and needs, government, and how people can make a difference in our world.
